Professional Semester One.
Below you will find evidence and artifacts of my first Professional Semester in the Faculty of Education. The knowledge that has been gained from the five short weeks of practicum as well as the 8 weeks of course work is leaps and bounds above what I thought I would learn.
My first Professional Semester was spent at Senator Buchanan Elementary School on the North side of Lethbridge. I worked in a grade 4/5 multi-age classroom with Sharleen Albrecht (TA) and Wendy Parkhill (Educational Assistant). I spent roughly a third of my time in the classroom teaching and the remaining time observing and preparing. In addition to the work in my classroom, I worked closely with the other 4/5 teachers to plan activities that all three classrooms worked together on (cross curricular activities).
I spent the majority of my time teaching science and math; however, I did teach gym, goal setting and social studies in addition (just to name a few). Below you will find evidence of of my time in PSI through my planning, evaluation and assessment practices that I utilized. |

LESSON PLANNING
SCIENCE
I did many creative SMART board lessons and one in particular that went over very well, in fact the students were so engaged in the learning experience they did not even notice that the lunch bell rang and the experiment went a few minutes into their lunch hour. The lesson was Separation Techniques; we discussed different types of mixtures in a previous class and students applied this knowledge as well as personal experience to help them in this lesson.
Below is the lesson plan used to teach the lesson as well as the worksheets the students used as fill in notes/ worksheet and the notebook lesson.

Cross Curricular Performance Task
During my time at Buchanan I worked closely with fellow 4/5 teacher Aaron Fitchett to put together a performance type task for the students that would involve all the core units; math, social, science, and english. Students were to create, in a small group, one building from Fort Edmonton out of gingerbread; between the two classes all of the buildings in Fort Edmonton were created and put on display for all to see at the Christmas concert.
In the math portion of this project, students used their measurement skills to create building plans out of card stock, which we based the gingerbread off of. Students measured all sides (lengths and widths), identified 90 degree angles, calculated the area and perimeter as well as identified parallel, perpendicular, and intersecting lines. In social studies, students learned all about Fort Edmonton and continued talking about the fur traders and First Nations of Canada. In English, students created diaries/diary entries of a chosen character from the movie Ikwe -1986 (http://www.nfb.ca/film/ikwe/). Students utilized the writing process to complete this; pre writing, drafting, editing, revising, publishing. In science, students made a batch of gingerbread in class to reinforce the mixing of substances, as well as irreversible chemical changes.
Below is the performance task used and ONE of the summative assessments used.

REFLECTIONSThe tab on the right contains reflections after each lesson taught, as well as an overall reflection from my time at Senator Buchanan. In each reflection there is a quick recap of the lesson, as well as +'s and -'s. I kept this consistant through every reflection becasue I wanted uniform recollections of the lessons taught.
